COVERGIRL SUPER SIZER AND INTENSIFY ME EYELINER REVIEW

Friday, July 31, 2015

A month ago I received the new CoverGirl Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara. The mascara is supposed to give your lashes more volume for full, fanned out lashes. I also received the Intensify Me! Liquid Liner.  It's supposed to give you the same control of a pencil with the intensity of a liquid eyeliner for beautifully defined eyes every time. One of these products I LOVED and the other I did not. Can you guess which one?
I absolutely love this mascara. It gives my lashes a lot of length and great color! It also prevents my lashes from looking "clunky," that is major! Check out this blurb from Allure.com:

"First, there's the wand: Sandwiched in between the longer bristles are rows of the tiniest little baby bristles you've ever seen. And these tiny bristles get loaded up with tons of mascara—so much so that 'mascara hits your lashes before the bristles do,' Vickery explained. 'That initial drenching of the lashes is unusual, and what it does is deposit a ton of mascara right at the lash line, giving you that intensity that makes your lashes look thicker.' The longer bristles comb the pigment evenly through to the tips, especially if you roll the wand toward you (this is key). The other interesting thing about the Super Sizer wand is that the longer bristles are spaced far apart—26 percent farther apart than on most mascara wands, to be exact—so that lashes are coated with mascara in groups. 'By coating the lashes in uniform groups, you end up with more of a dramatic look,' says Vickery. I can attest. My lashes nearly touched my brow bone. And finally, the formula: "It's a dual-polymer system balanced with the perfect mix of clays and waxes," says Vickery. That basically means the formula is both flexible (so you have some play time when applying it) and long-lasting (so you won't get to work looking like you never went home the night before). You really have to try this stuff."

I did not love the liner. The brush itself felt uncomfortable on my skin, it didn't feel gentle at all. It felt somewhat tough and hard. Unfortunately, I couldn't perfect my wing with the tip. My first impression was that it was difficult to achieve an angled wing with this brush. For $1.99 my NYC Liquid Eyeliner does a much better job and lasts throughout the day.

Run and get the mascara but ditch the liner!

CHEAP PRIMER - NIVEA MEN'S AFTER SHAVE

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

I discovered a new primer that I love, are you ready? Nivea's Men's After Shave! Yes, men's after shave. Not only is this product CHEAP ($6 bucks or less at Target, CVS, Rite Aid, etc) but it works wonders! Rumors swirled around the beauty world and I just had to test this out for myself.

This product is meant to smooth and improve sensitive skin. It makes the skin of most men baby soft after they shave, so it must be a great product for women as well. I decided to test it out! I washed my face as normal, applied moisturizer, followed by the after shave. I used a sponge to apply my foundation and immediately noticed how glowling and smooth my face looked. How would the makeup hold out throughout the day? Well, my foundation was in great shape. It could of been a combo of the primer and foundation. Since using this combination, I've received a lot more compliments from both women and men.

Heads up, this product product (photo below) does have a slight scent. Yes, it smells kinda like a man but I like it : )

Have you tried this combination yet? Comment below!

MY DRY BAR EXPERIENCE WITH NATURAL HAIR

Monday, July 27, 2015
I've seen Drybar all around New York City but never thought it was an option for me. My hair has been natural for over ten years and I've always had my hair done at a Dominican or African American beauty salon.

The concept of DryBar was always intriguing. It's a very simple idea: No cuts. No color. Just blowouts!.What they believe is that almost everyone (even the pros) prefer having someone else blow out their hair. As someone with natural hair, I cannot blow out my own hair. Not only could it take me hours (my hair is super thick), a necessary skill is needed to turn my hair from curly to straight.
Also, instead of paying $60+ at a traditional salon, or going to a less-than-desirable discount chain, DryBar offers a flat fee of $45 dollars (it recently increased from 40 dollars.) For a few extra bucks, you can add on a deep conditioning treatment, head massage, etc.
After getting my hair done there twice, I can finally share my overall opinion. The price is great (about the same I'd pay at a Dominican salon), and the blow outs are amazing (more on that in a second) but it's the customer service that I love! Customer service that I haven't received from some of my other salons in the past. Setting up an appointment was easy, they have an app for that! How cool? Once I arrived at my appointment, I was seen within 10 minutes. A stylist came out to greet me "Hey, Shannon" and I'm asked if I'd like coffee, tea, water, or .... a mimosa! My favorite! I'm taken to a bar area where I can put down my things and then off to get my hair washed. The decor in the salon is absolutely fabulous ( I love the pop of yellow in the color scheme.) The products smell yummy! Your stylist does your hair start to finish.  If I had to complain about two things in my prior salon it would be: the wait time and dealing with multiple stylists in one appointment.
I'm sure you may have experienced this before. You get to the salon, one person washes your hair, another person sets your hair, and so on. Sometimes I'd like one dedicated person to do it through and through. Secondly, waiting sucks! I've spent 5 hours at a salon before (on a weekend) when I could of been out within 2 hours instead. The long wait usually stems from having to wait for your stylist to finish another customer before they could tend back to you. At DryBar, you have one stylist that focuses on you and only you, the entire time! How amazing is that?

Once my stylist washed my hair she took me to the bar area and the blow out began! First, she handed me a menu book. The menu contained several of their signature styles, click here to check it out. So far I've experienced the Mai Tai and Straight Up, both styles came out great!

When I informed several of my friends and Instagram followers about my experience, a lot of them were surprised because I have natural hair. Here's the thing! Can every DryBar handle natural hair? I don't know. I specifically did research prior to going. First, I went on yelp and I searched "Natural Hair" within a few different DryBar locations. Quickly I learned the names of a few stylists in various locations that have done natural hair before and were good at it! Another way to research is by using instagram hashtags. I searched #drybarnyc #drybarnewyork #drybarny #drybarmeatpacking and searched for brown beauties like myself. When I stumbled across a stylist, bingo! I knew I had the one. When I booked my appointment they gave the option of leaving a comment. My comment was very specific "Hi, I have natural hair. I would like a natural hair stylist to do my hair the day of my appointment. I would like to request Cynthia if she's available that day please." Easy? That's exactly who I got when I arrived and she did a great job! Now ... did my hair last? If you have natural hair, you know that not all products for all hair types work with our hair. It's important to use a product that can beat that humidity! My first experience at DryBar was great but I did notice my hair frizzed up a bit more quickly than it does at my usual hair salon. The solution for me was easy! I found a product I could apply on my hair after my blow out that would help to reduce the frizz.

Although I'll still need to go to my salon once every now and then for a cut and color, I'll definitely be returning to Drybar for another blow out (and mimosa) soon. Would you try Drybar? Comment below.

The past few weekends have been great! I celebrated my friend Rana's Birthday at La Marina, an indoor/outdoor beach venue in Washington Heights. Since it was 90 degrees in New York this weekend, I wore Forever 21 high waist shorts, a green army top (from a local neighborhood boutique), and a flannel shirt from H&M, sunnies by QUAY. HOW TO GET RID OF DARK SPOTS

Wednesday, June 24, 2015
Oh, the dreaded dark spot. You've been doing so well keeping your skin acne free. Now, it's that time of the month and you got an unfortunate pimple. Even more unfortunate, it left behind a mark! Nothing worse. If you are lucky, you'll have one mark but if you suffered a bad breakout you may have several. This situation happens to a lot of women - especially women of color. So how do you make this go away? Well, patience. It takes time for the marks to actually fade. In the meantime, their are several products that I love that could help make this process go by a lot quicker. Check out the video below for details.

Silk n' Sonic Clean: This facial brush provides a deep-cleansing for healthier, younger looking skin. The SonicCleanPlus is easy to use and comes with three brushes. Use it at night (or in the morning) to achieve cleaner and more radiant skin. This products works effectively to remove dead skin cells and other impurities.

Ponds Fade Cream: This product is known to help even out your skin tone in 2 weeks, while reducing the appearance of dark spots in 4 weeks. I personally do not use this every day. I use it a couple times a week at night as a moisturizer.

Garnier Skin Renew Clinical Dark Spot Overnight Peel: Skin Renew Clinical Dark Spot Overnight Peel fades spots and reveals smoother, brighter, more even tone skin. After washing your face at night, apply a small amount of the leave-on peel and go to bed. When you wake up in the morning wash your face as usual.

Dr. Dennis Gross Peel: This is my FAVORITE skincare product right now. It's worth every single penny! Hands down the reason why I have clear, even (knock on wood) skin right now and not a single break out ( knock on wood). This is an anti-aging facial peel on presoaked cotton towelettes. These patented two-step treatment pads deliver visible anti=aging results without recovery time. They work to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and pore size, while creating a more even skintone and brightening the complexion. Recommended for sensitive skin, the pads also work to calm redness and irritation and clear imperfections resulting in a healthy, glowing complexion. DO NOT purchase the pads that come in the tub! These are known to dry out towards the bottom. Purchasing the pads that are individually wrapped is suggested. Though pricey, this product is worth it. 100%! Stay tuned for an upcoming video on this product in my skincare video.

TRAVEL BUCKET LIST: HELLO JAMAICA

Monday, June 15, 2015

It all started with a Google search. We saw one villa, we pursued one villa, and we were forever changed. Before we arrived, our correspondence with the house manager was seamless, and our anticipation grew with each timely and thoroughly answered question.

Six of my closest friends and I flew into the Kingston airport early one spring morning and begun our journey to, what can only be described as the most relaxing weekend I have ever experienced. When we pulled up to the villa in the fantastic Karandas Tour arranged van, we were met with the warmest smile from Pat and Elvis, who greeted us as if we had known them our whole lives. We entered the home and it was more vibrant and beautiful than can be captured in any picture.

We later met Bryan and Cherry who, like Pat and Elvis, were remarkable people who we now regard as friends. Bryan is superhuman, during the duration of the trip if we so much as had a thought for any item, it would suddenly manifest itself in his hands. Our group was full of seven very harsh culinary critics, but everything Cherry made was beyond exceptional, I can’t possibly speak more highly of her or the food. Every meal we had outside of the villa paled in comparison.

The villa, which is nestled between several resorts, puts the larger establishments to shame. We felt like Queens of the island as we tanned on our lounge chairs, explored on kayaks, relaxed in the pool or just floated in the Caribbean Sea. Bryan literally provided the soundtrack to the weekend, playing a festive but relaxed mix of reggae tunes.

It is also worth noting that the rooms are air conditioned at night, but during the day, all of the doors and windows are opened as a warm breeze flows through the house.

They also are expert concierge, pointing us to the best activities like the Blue Hole and setting up taxis by land or sea.

We now consider Scotch on the Rocks our Ochi home. The stay feels like you are visiting relatives, the kindheartedness of the staff, beauty of the home, and tranquility of your surroundings creates something unique and indescribable that you must experience for yourself.

The villa and staff truly embody the essence and spirit of Jamaica: Out of many, one people.

NATURAL MAKEUP

Sunday, June 14, 2015

Warm weather is finally here which means that it may be a good time to transition your makeup from Winter to Summer. Usually during warmer months I wear more natural makeup in order to wear less makeup. The last thing I want to do is wear a heavy foundation in 100 degree weather. In the video below I demonstrate how to achieve a natural makeup appearance.

Luckily, my skin has improved (knock on wood) and I have very little problem areas because of my new routine (which I will do a video on soon). Applying makeup with a lighter coverage comes easy to me but I understand for someone that has problematic skin, wearing natural/light makeup can be quite difficult. Most natural looking makeup provides little coverage.  BB Creams or CC Creams (for color correction) or a product like MAC Face & Body are good selections for someone in search of a lighter foundation with a bit more coverage. For a very natural look try a tinted moisturizer which helps with uneven skin tones. Often times by applying a bit of concealer you can help fix specific areas.

BALMAIN TO SELL IN H&M

Monday, May 18, 2015

Last night Kylie Jenner rocked the Billboard Music Awards red carpet wearing a Balmain dress
with the creative director of the Parisian house of Balmain, Olivier Rousteing. Along with model Jourdan Dunn, they were all dressed in Balmain x H&M revealing the first pieces from the designer collaboration (screams).

H&M announced that the line would appear in H&M stores this Fall.

“We are excited to have Balmain as our guest designer at H&M and create a truly involving experience for everybody. With its mix of couture spirit and streetwear attitude, Balmain owns a unique style, at once opulent and direct, sensual and energetic. It is also closely linked to the show business and music worlds, which adds another element of surprise,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M.

The collection will hit the stores November 5, and will feature clothing and accessories for both women and men. Are you you excited for #HMBalmaination? Comment below.

MAC PRO CONCEAL AND CORRECT PALETTE REVIEW & DEMO

Monday, April 27, 2015
Say bye to evil under eye problems with the MAC Pro Conceal & Correct Palette. I've tried every under eye concealer under the sun. I couldn't find the right concealer until now. Yay! Although a bit pricey at $40, this is a professional palette of four concealer shades - NC40, NW40, NC42, NW43 - and two corrector shades in Rich Yellow and Burnt Coral so you definitely get your money's worth!
Enriched with antioxidants and suited for all skin types, they can be used individually or combined to perfectly match any skin tone. In the video below I show you how I use this product to hid my darker under eye area.

How To Use It:
I apply a tiny amount of the burnt orange in the inner corner of my eye with a concealer brush. I blend the color evenly on my skin and then apply a combination of the yellow and lighter brown shades. The best way to do this is to experiment until you can find the right combination that fits with your skin. You can also use this palette to contour your face, highlight the under eye area, and conceal dark spots.

MAC Pro Conceal and Correct Palette:
Pros:
- Staying power if you set it with powder after applying
- This looks very natural on the skin, not heavy or "cakey" if you use small amounts
- Won't change color or smudge
- Will not clog pores
- Light and easy packaging, easy to travel with

Cons:
- It can get messy around the sides so you should clean it after each use
- Pricey

Final thoughts:  Overall I love this product! This is exactly what I need. I may not use this every day but when I want to look photo ready I am definitely going to use my new palette.

BIRTHDAY WISH LIST

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Yup! It's that time of the year AGAIN ... can you believe it? Time goes by quickly I guess when you are getting older. Here is what I did on my Birthday last year. As I write this post I have no idea if I'll even do anything next week. I like to make these Birthday lists for fun. It doesn't mean that I think I'll get anything on it but a girl can dream right? Leggo ...

1. I had my very first body scrub a few years ago after covering an event for work at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. One of the models revealed to me that prior to walking the runway she likes to get her skin ready by getting a body scrub treatment. I searched around for a few spa deals and came across a spa in New York City. Right now they are offering a great discount on services for Spa Week! Click here to check it out. The overall experience was VERY interesting. Would you like me to blog about my next one? I'd love to go back again. The overall experience left my skin baby soft and smooth.

2. I follow celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta on instagram @Patrickta  and he is a big fan of Kevyn Aucoin's skin enhancer product. Here is a look that he created, click here. You can use it either as an overall foundation or just as a concealer. For my concealer I believe that I would be in the shade SX9 because I like a lighter highlight under my eye. I couldn't quite figure out what I would be in the foundation and I'm not even sure I'd want to use it for that purpose. This all-in-one, waterproof formula delivers complete coverage when used as a concealer, highlighter, an allover foundation, or to contour your features. Infused with jojoba and honey, it works to hydrate the skin, and it is formulated with minerals that support the skin and is sweat proof and transfer resistant for full coverage and long-lasting wear. I heard this product smells really good too! Click here for more info.

3.Christian Louboutin shoes. No need to explain why ... it's self explanatory. Every girl deserves to have at least one pair in life.

4. Everyone is RAVING about this new NARS foundation! I'll treat myself and I'm kind of sick of every foundation I've been using lately. This time of the year is always tricky because you have to purchase foundation knowing that you may get a tan soon. I hate that! Do I wait until my tan is here? or do I purchase now and guess what color I may be? Who knows what I'll do.

5. A Momofuku Milk Bar Birthday Layer Cake with sparklers! I doubt I'll get this because I'm on a 30 Day shred diet and this would basically mess it all up. Whenever I have a birthday cake I notice that I have tons of left overs and I'm stuck eating the cake for days.

6. For years my Mom has suggested that I get a new bed. I've had the same bed since I moved into my first apartment after college. It's a full bed and I really need a Queen bed. Plus, it has a foot board and headboard which drives my nerves. I really would prefer not to have a foot board this time around. Lately I've been loving these grey tufted beds and every time I see one on a YouTube "Room Tour" or Instagram I get even more excited to finally get my own some day.

7. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Peel (Extra Strength). I went to my friends apartment and she gave me her new skincare rundown. I was so intrigued by these peel pads that I ran to Sephora a few days later and purchased them. The reviews online are all positive so I knew this stuff had to be good. Everyone kept saying that its very similar to giving yourself a spa facial/peel at home without the expensive cost. It can visibly improve dark spots and skintone. Easy to apply, simply sweep the pre-soaked cotton towelettes across the face according to the two-step system. I've been using this for THREE WEEKS and let me tell you my skin is on POINT right now! (knock on wood, I don't want to jinx myself). My skin is glowing, no breakouts, clear, any small dark spots are pretty much gone or fading. I am convinced it's because of these pads. The five treatments come in individual packs and I do this once a week.

Note: I suggest buying the five pack instead of the container because if you purchase the container of pads I heard that they will dry up quickly.

8. Another product that my friend suggested is the Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash by Philosophy. I got a sample size of this product and I've been really impressed with how well it cleans my face. I would love to eventually get the full size version of this. This is a mild, exfoliating facial cleanser for moisturized, smooth skin.

9. Izzi Slim is the most tech-savvy case available for the iPhone 5/5s, with four interchangeable lenses that make it easier than ever to switch up photo angles on the fly. It's dramatic perspectives and high-quality performance give you no excuses to take a bad photo ever again. Please ignore the selfie stick I actually only want the iphone case because I already own two selfie sticks (don't judge me .. they were gifts - one for my iphone and one for my camera).

10. I saw one of my favorite YouTubers Desi Perkins rocking these sunnies on Instagram! I fell in love! I love big sunglasses and I love the shade of blue. These weren't going on sale FOREVER but yesterday they were posted so I got them. YAY - check them out here.

11. Becca Highlighter in Opal - golden opal pearl. This is on my makeup must list! Somewhere in Dubai I lost my MAC highlight. No idea where it is. I'm so sad but instead of purchasing it again I'll try something new. I've heard great things about this Becca highlight! A natural highlight will give you the appearance of glowing skin. Who doesn't want that?

I also love Birthdays because you can get tons of FREE (or low cost) gifts from a lot of companies. Click Here to check out a previous post where I shared all of the freebies offered. Early Birthday shout out to all of my Taurus babies! : ) Happy Birthday.

TRAVEL BUCKET LIST: HELLO ABU DHABI & DUBAI

Thursday, April 16, 2015

This trip was epic and here is why! Dubai (Arabic: دبيّ‎ ) is the most populous city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the second largest emirate by territorial size after the capital, Abu Dhabi. We picked the perfect time to travel in February because we heard it can get really hot there later in the Summer and Fall.

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is the hub for Etihad. Photo courtesy of Shutterstock

I  purchased this bright green suitcase from TJ Maxx. Not only was it affordable but also lightweight. This was the perfect piece of luggage to bring with me on my trip. My original plan was to use this as a carry on but Etihad has strict weight requirements and my bag was over the weight limit (booo). At first I was annoyed because I realized I could have brought way more stuff but in the long run it was probably for the best anyway. I brought exactly what I needed!

Our flight landed in Abu Dhabi but we mostly stayed in Dubai for the entire trip. When we did visit Abu Dhabi we made sure to check out Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

If you are into making your own clothing or using designer fabrics, I highly recommend shopping in the Gold Souk area. Not only will you find gold there but also fabrics and other amazing items as well (someone tried to sell us purses and weave, that was interesting!)

All gold everythang! Gold all in my watch ... gold all in my chain ... listen when I heard that they have a strip that sold nothing but gold I was sold. Don't be fooled! Just because we're in the UAE doesn't mean it's going to be CHEAP. The good news is you can try to bargain but the prices are going to be what's expected. Since our money is worth more there you can get a deal but it's not a whole lot less. The quality though is amazing! Once I got there I realized that the gold I've had in the past can nowhere compare to this gold. This gold looked like the gold you see draped on rappers in music videos or on boxers like Floyd Mayweather. Bling!

You know for the majority of the trip I did this updo look. Click here to read the beauty essentials
I brought along with me for the ride. This hair do needed to be slicked back at all times and I had just the product to get it done.

I got this really cute two-piece outfit from Tobi.com. I shop there a lot in the Spring/Summer because they have great discount deals and they ship FAST.  First time customers receive 50% off, sign up soon!

This was my first time getting henna! Want to see how this process is done? Check out
Promise Phans video on how to do it yourself.

Everything we ate was very fresh! The seafood was delicious especially this lobster dish.

Even though they did have Starbucks (and tons of other American restaurants like - Cheesecake Factory, McDonalds, even Popeyes!) I still wanted to try a place I haven't been to before. Kelly and I every morning took a trip to Costa to get a blended expresso that didn't disappoint.

Our hotel was amazing! We all loved it. We stayed at the Dubai Marriott Marina and had three bedrooms, two floors, a huge kitchen and living room. It was the perfect penthouse suite! The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. They had a pool on the roof deck, as well as a spa with a Jacuzzi and showers. While we were waiting for our room to be ready we enjoyed hanging
out at the spa and even made a friend from London.

At night we enjoyed going out to dinner, taking a boat ride on the water with new friends, going to clubs like White Dubai and spending time with each other.

Was I scared? Hell yeah. They may not look big in this photo but this camel was huge. Just getting on that thing had me terrified but as you can see I made it. If you go on a safari I suggest wearing loose clothing and sneakers or sandals that you can easily walk in. Bring an extra camera battery or back up phone charger because you won't be able to plug in. Although these packages were purchased through Groupon a lot of people tend to forget that the staff at these locations get overlooked. Be friendly and give them a tip : ) they will appreciate it.

THE SCOOP ...

Etihad Airline: I have to admit I was nervous before flying on Etihad because it has such a bad online reputation. People talk about the discomfort of the airplane and that it's not as great as the others. I was shocked when I actually flew on it and had an amazing experience. I'm only 5'5 so perhaps a larger person could feel a bit snug but I felt comfortable. The food on the airline was good, some of it a bit odd (for breakfast they gave us eggs and beans) but overall I enjoyed the food. They give you unlimited alcohol! When you aren't sleeping you can enjoy movies and TV shows. The movies were brand new, I finally got to watch Frozen and they also featured films such as Gone Girl and Nightwalker.

Culture/People: I always felt very safe in Dubai. The people are so friendly and welcoming. Everyone was very respectful. In the club, the men were never rude or inappropriate which I can appreciate (living in New York). We had a great time meeting people and getting to know them and we made friends from Sudan to London and Hungry!

Food: It was very difficult to find authentic food from there because they pull from so many different backgrounds including American. As I mentioned above I probably saw every American restaurant that you could imagine. From Auntie Annie's, to Popeye's, to Church's Chicken. The most authentic it got was the safari which consisted of a chicken kebab and rice. I heard one of the highlights of Dubai are the brunches there. Unfortunately, we didn't get to experience the champagne brunch but if I were to go back I'd check it out.

Tours/Nightline/Activities: As a group we talked about the things that we wanted to do the most in the UAE. On the top of the list was shopping (we're girls so that's obvious), the gold souks, the gold ATM, safari desert, a yacht ride, and visiting the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.  The Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque can hold up to 40,000 worshipers and is a must see! We were happy to discover that Dubai has Groupon! Its great to take advantage of these deals but I highly suggest you do this BEFORE the trip not during. It's a lot easier to book these tours in advance.
