'Cocktails and Conversation' Networking Event: Part 2

This networking series was created by two friends and I. It's for young professionals based inNew York City who are currently working in TV, film, music, print and new media. Our goal is to establish a new tradition of upscale business gatherings through which we can all meet, network and socialize. The Birthday Update

Happy Birthday to me in a month!

As you know I've been planning my Birthday party for a while now and .....

I think we may be getting close to finding a venue! A lot of places in New York are either closed down (due to the economy), too big of a club, too selective at the door to invite a lot of friends, have a crazy cover charge, or play womp womp music. This process has taken me a while but I checked out a venue last Friday that I LOVED and I'm just waiting for the Manager to confirm that it's available. It's beautiful. It's a private room on the second floor of this New York boutique hotel. Fingers crossed! We've almost got everything off the check list. The invites (via facebook and word of mouth) have been out and all we have to hope is that it works out with zero drama, hehehe.

Hair Concept

I love Aaliyah. If you couldn't already tell ... I adore her.

I already wear my hair a lot like her straight hairstyle.

I love her style, I love her music! This is one of my favorite looks from her. I love the wavy style of this hair do, I don't like tight tight curls so this wavy look is what i'm going for the night of my Birthday. Let's hope my hair stylist can get this right. I usually wear my hair super straight but it will be nice to have some body to it to create a little drama.

I will say ... it's a dress! but not revealing it just yet, you'll have to wait until the day after to find out.

Last night my friend celebrated her Birthday in the Penthouse at the Gansevoort Hotel in NYC. We had a great time even though it's still freezing in New York. Who would think it would still be as cold as it was in December in March? Yikes! It was great to see all of my girls and celebrate with my friend.

I've been MIA!

5 things you should know right now ....

1. I've been missing in action. I'm sorry. These past few weeks have been insane! Especially with my work load at my job. I just haven't had the time to do many posts. Also, we had another 'Cocktails & Conversation' networking event last night and it was fab! but planning kept me busy too! (pics to come soon)

2. I went to the New York City premiere of 'Why I'd Get Married Too' and the after party at the Bowery, it was great! I loved the movie. It was soooo funny. Have you seen the first one? Some people think Tyler Perry's movies can be over the top dramatic (Madea Goes To Jail, Madea's Family Reunion, etc) but I find the movies enjoyable. No one is saying ... Oscar Winning but a good time with some girls to watch together. (trying to track down some photos from that night and I will post)

3. I still don't have a Birthday venue. Remember in my old post I talked about planning it, click here. Getting close though... checking out a spot on Friday (wish me luck). The party is one month from today. I do know how I want to do my makeup! THIS ( < -- click) inspired me. I love it. It's dramatic and will go perfect with my dress and hair for the night. Hmm.. some people have stopped me and said I resemble Leona. What do you think?

4. I reunited with my Aldo shoes. I love these shoes and wore them for the second time in life this weekend! They actually didn't hurt as much as they did the first time.

The first time was sort of brutal. I love them because they are so tall and I love tall shoes! Wearing them this weekend was great. It was the first time I wore open toed shoes since last Summer! The weather was so nice that day. Now if only it would come back ... NY is cold right now.

5. I am a bridesmaid! My friend Danielle (see below) and her boyfriend Chris got engaged. I'm so happy for them. They are very cute together! The wedding is in October which is very soon so lots of planning to do and I'm going to help out. I'm happy she was able to find such a nice guy. I wonder what this bridesmaid dress is going to look like ... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Forward March!

I love Military inspired jackets. I found this really cute one... perfect timing! Spring will be here on Saturday, YIPPE!!! and New York will be 70 degrees tomorrow. I need a light short jacket for cool nights and warm days. This one is perfect!

Back story. I use to always question why people do the things they do, say the things they say, turn away from you and pop back into your life at random moments. I use to sit and wonder the ways in which I could change the past - what I did wrong, what I could have done so this never happened. Truth is .. it's out of your hands, once you realize that - things come a lot easier. I feel like things happen for a reason and you can always walk away learning something from it. This quote is very interesting because when you want something more than anything you always work your best to make sure you get it! or at least try your best not to lose it. When you are holding on to something really tight and unsure if it's going to hold you up, maybe the best thing to do is let go and see if you rise or fall. I've been told I'm a strong person, I can "hold my own" I am very independent. Some people feel as though it's a bad thing ... others say a good thing. Thoughts?

I love a little black dress don't you?

Every girl needs a little black dress! I found this one on asos.com and I love it.

My favorite part is the puffed sleeve. A huge trend right now are bold sleeves. These types of sleeves bring all the attention to your shoulders and neckline. I've seen this style on shirts (like this one), jackets and dresses.

You can even make your own if you are feeling creative! All you have to do is cut out the shoulder pads out of old shirt, dress or suit (if you go to a thrift shop or army navy store you can find something like this on a bargain), cut out the shoulder pad and simply sew it back inside a new dress, jacket or shirt to create a chic, fun look!

I can't wait to wear my dress to a friends 'all black' rooftop Birthday Party in two weeks. Pictures to come!

doing my party dance in ....

Let the countdown begin . .

I love throwing a Birthday party every year because I love event planning. I also enjoy the opportunity to have a great time with my friends, and to connect old friends with new ones! Every year I have anxiety that no one will show up but ... that's never the case. Planning the party though can be a bit of a headache. Even though it's still a month away. I still have a lot of stuff to do.

To Do List:

1. Find A Venue

When it comes to picking a venue, this can be very difficult. I live in NEW YORK a city with tons of lounges & clubs and bars, and cool places to throw an amazing birthday party. But ... the real deal is, when it comes to my Birthday I try to choose venues that are 1) affordable to friends (no cover) 2) not strict at the door (which is basically everywhere that's cool) so i don't get a bunch of "I can't get in" texts all night 3) has great music (I love hip hop) 4) great dance floor ( who doesn't love to dance? )

2. Invite People

Should I use evite.com? Should I send out a blast email? Should I make a facebook invite? What's the best way to spread the word. When do i send it out? Should I send a save the date? oh so many questions! Some people like know far in advance, some people only need to know a week before the event. Either way- I have to somehow please both sides.

3. What do to with you hair?

I hated my hair last year for my Birthday. I was having a bad hair year in general. I went from dark to light and over time my hair got all funny and loss its pretty little way! but I'm happy to say that one year later we are fully recovered and back in action : ) So ... I need to start figuring out what I want to do. Up or maybe down or maybe half up or half down! who knows ...

What I do know!

What I'm wearing! Yes, I have my dress. I've had this dress since December and I've been dying to wear it. (sometimes I put it on in my apartment and walk around, I need to be careful in case I accidently spill something on it) I won't reveal it though until the day after my party ; ) so we'll keep it a secret for now. What I will say is a certain singer whose known for singing about Umbrella's wore a very similar dress not too long ago.

The date! Even though my Birthday is on the 29th - I've decided to have my Birthday party on a Saturday so it's a lot easier for people to attend and also for me to prepare.

I want to add something different! Last year it was food. I ordered delicious Chocolate Covered Strawberries and Cheesecake Lollipops.
